As the country faces austerity measures and the cost of food, petrol and living are causing concerns for millions of people, one radio station has offered to lighten the load.
Heart 106 has offered to halve the price of petrol for a few lucky motorists across the region with a fuel promotion. They will announce a particular petrol station to visit on air at 8am on September 16th and have promised that the first 106 visitors to turn up at that petrol station would receive half-price fuel.
The price of petrol for these fortunate few will reflect the prices of nearly 15 years ago, which are half of what they are today and the promotion has been dubbed ‘Retro Petrol’.

A blundered attempt at a robbery in a petrol station in Carlisle has seen a police search launched for the culprits.
Two men tried to stage a robbery at the Harraby Green Service Station on London Road in Carlisle but were unable to pull it off thanks to the quick thinking of the cashier.
The robbers walked into the garage holding bars as weapons and threatened the attendant on duty. The raid happened shortly after 700 BST, when the robbers strolled in with their faces obscured. The attendant has described the disguise of one robber as being a “home-made balaclava”. Trying their hand at the heist, the two robbers tried to scare the attendant into giving them the contents of the till. One man demanded to be given money but the attendant met their threats with a flat refusal.

There has been a redevelopment of the Aberdeen Maritime Museum’s galleries featuring information on energy exploration thanks to funding from the Oil and Gas UK industry organisation.
Around £360,000 has been raised by members of Oil and Gas UK who are hoping to support the project that will explore their industry and its history.
The local council are also keen to support the exhibition, with Martin Greig of the education, culture and sport committee saying, “The energy industry has played a central role in the recent economy of the North-east so it is appropriate to be able to enhance the museum collection to record the history of the local oil and gas extraction processes.”

Two new 1.6 litre petrol engines will be unveiled by car manufacturer Volvo later on in the year.
The new codenamed T3 and T4 four-cylinder units will offer 148 and 178 bhp respectively and are earmarked for several Volvo models. The engines utilise technology called GTDi which stands for Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection.
Running on new systems that boost the efficiency of the fuel, economy and emissions are also improved. Volvo are keeping their cards close to their chest and they haven’t released any figures as of yet detailing the performance of the new engine models.

A petrol station in the town of Porthmadog is causing gridlock on the nearby road as queues of cars wait to use the services on the A487 southbound towards the Cob.
In a bid to fill up at the petrol pumps, drivers are causing a backlog in the nearby roads of the Gwynedd town. Residents have voiced their concerns that the problem may be exacerbated in the next year when the Welsh Highland Railway begins train services just across from the petrol garage.

A petrol station in Gloucester may close after cut-price petrol sold by the nation’s supermarkets has driven demand for fuel elsewhere.
In the tough times of price wars, notably ones between the main supermarket chains, have put pressure on out-of-town petrol suppliers who are facing a battle to get customers through the doors.

He caused a furore after plans of his were released documenting the proposed build of a new so-called ’space-age petrol station’ and now Rowan Atkinson has leapt to the defence of his new home.
Neighbours protested when the Blackadder star and Mr Bean actor submitted plans to demolish his 1930s mansion and replace it with a modern home that is designed in the style of a flat-roofed petrol garage. Holiday goers will return home to a very unpleasant surprise when they land back at Stanstead Airport in Essex after a blaze began and spread across the car park via the petrol tanks.
Photographs of the car wreckage resembles something from an apocalyptic horror film, with charred vehicles gutted of their interiors. Twenty four cars in all have been damaged by the blaze that took hold at the long-stay car park in the airport. In the early hours of Sunday, fire crews arrived to find the fire tearing through the premises and set about the laborious and dangerous task of putting the fire out.

Rock star Robert Plant of the iconic group Led Zeppelin has admitted that prior to his international fame as a musician he resorted to stealing petrol as he was too poor to pay for it.
Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and Robert Plant provided the vocals for the band that brought together guitarist Jimmy Page, bass guitarist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. They were incredibly influential as the creators of the heavy metal and hard rock genre.

An entrepreneur who has made his fortunes in the potato business is looking to create a vodka petrol from potatoes.
The spud-savvy businessman William Chase, whose ventures have created Chase Vodka and Tyrells Crisps, is now looking to diversify his market stance with a foray into the fuels sector. He hopes to manufacture a bio fuel made from potatoes and explore the possibilities for rolling it out as an alternative eco-friendly fuel source.
On the back of the current interest in hybrid petrol and bio fuel cars, Mr Chase is keen to follow the market and see if his beloved potatoes can create a viable fuel source.
