January 2006 - Easy Riser tackles the P/V valve changeover
problem.
The new Working at Height regulations
that came into force in April 2005 underline again, the importance
of the safe practice in this area. The vapour recovery systems now well established
in the UK, require annual inspection or changing of the high level
P/V valve. The established practice of using a “cherry
picker”, ladder or scaffolding to undertake the task is commonplace,
neither of which can guarantee the safety of the engineer undertaking
the task and also requires two men to complete the work. We
have researched this area carefully and have found the answer to
the problem of accessing the valve.
The newly launched Easy Riser has brought
together a commonsense approach of bringing the valve to the
engineer instead of the other way round. The main problem was finding a suitable swivel
joint that would retain the pressure in the line, whilst at the
same time, turn to allow the upper part of the stage one vapour
recovery unit to be lowered to working height. Without this
special swivel, the union would have been broken and the line would
require to be retested. |
|
The search was on to find such
a valve that would meet the specification. Using our wide
experience we found a manufacturer of such a swivel and, after
field tests, the complete unit was found to be a winner. You
simply unlock the riser pipe and lower the unit to working height
in an instant and the job is done by one man – instead
of two.
Engineers will no longer be exposed to working
at height to complete this task, thus eliminating the risk of
an accident and all that that can bring to an engineer and his
future. Easy Riser is an inexpensive solution to this problem
and is already being retrospectively fitted to Stage One installations
in the field. |
